Winter Hair Care Survival Guide.
Winter will be here before we know it, with cold, wet, windy days and dry indoor heating to contend with it might feel like you’re fighting a losing battle to keep your hair healthy!
Don’t let Mother Nature win, we have the perfect survival guide for you to put in place long before winter begins to take its toll.
Prevention is always better than cure!
Be sure to protect your hair by covering it with a hat, making sure it’s not too tight so it doesn’t restrict the blood flow to the scalp. To avoid the dreaded hat hair, why not have a five minute DIY Upcycle and line your hat with a silk scarf to help cut down static and protect your hair from fibre damage before pulling on your cosy winter beanie. Matrix Smooth Proof shampoo and conditioner will help keep frizz at bay. For curly girls adding an oil based moisturiser before blow drying like Matrix Exquisite oil will keep hair soft and add shine, whilst keeping hat hair at bay.
Leave in conditioner is a hugely unsung hero for keeping moisture locked in and helping to give your hair an added boost in these coming harsh winter months. For straight hair and static troubles try a lightweight wax, mousse or even hair oil to combat those fly aways. Matrix miracle creator has 20 beautifying benefits for your hair; leave in nourishment, boosts shine, keep frizz at bay and protects from heat damage whilst detangling and conditioning and many more!
Keep your hair and scalp hydrated by drinking plenty of water. This isn’t just a trick for the warmer summer months, your hair and body need great hydration all year round. For an added boost try Matrix Hydrasource shampoo and conditioner to provide 15 times more moisture and nourish hair with aloe extracts. Avoid over styling
Limit the use of hairdryers and other heated styling tools to make sure the heat doesn’t dry out your scalp. When you do blow dry your hair adding a leave in conditioner will keep moisture levels up and using a heat protection spray like Matrix Mega Sleek Iron Smoother enriched with shea butter will ensure your locks are still healthy and prevent heat damage.
To give your hair a break from constant washes braids, twist and plaits are just a few quick and easy ideas for day three hair ups to hide a multitude of sins. Another great tip is to use the cool setting on your hairdryer when blow drying, we know that the nice hot air is lovely when it’s cold outside but believe us your hair will thank you for it. If you really must use heat hold the dryer 15cm away from your locks to avoid too much damage.
Tidy hair is happy hair
Regular trims every 6-8 weeks will combat the chance of winter chills drying out your ends and reduce those dreaded split ends that can leave your hair looking damaged and less than it’s best.
Easy does it
When washing your hair take it easy on the extra hot showers and baths. The same way that too much heat from styling tools can damage your hair so can hot water. It’s best to wash your hair in cool or warm water so that the sensitive skin on your scalp isn’t damaged as it’s more prone to sensitivity in winter. Even your skin will benefit from this!
As tempting as it maybe sometimes to leave the house with slightly damp hair when you’re in a rush in the morning, don’t! As the temperatures outside plummet you are running the risk of your hair freezing and breaking at the cuticle. Instead treat your hair to a good quality shampoo and conditioner like Matrix Sugar Shine Shampoo and conditioner which are silicone free to give a lightweight healthy shine which are great for colour treated hair too.
Five minutes is all it takes
Something as simple as a weekly conditioning treatment can really be the difference between healthy winter hair and dry, lifeless dull hair. To keep your hair moisture levels replenished a five minute deep conditioning treatment like the Matrix Hydrasource mask will keep nourishment on point and your locks looking lovely.
Three degrees of salvation!
Your central heating has a lot to answer for when it comes to your Barnet! Not only will turning the thermostat down by 3 degrees save you money, it’ll also stop your hair, scalp and skin feeling dry and sensitive. If you're suffering with an irritated, dry or flaky scalp already Biolage Scalpsync will help relieve any irritation.
Sweeten the deal
To give dull, lifeless, frizzy winter hair a boost apply raw honey to the length of your hair from root to tips, cover with a shower cap and leave for 30 minutes. Wash away with warm water and style as desired and enjoy the shine and bounce this wonder working humectant has restored.
Invest in a humidifier.
We naturally all crank up the heat during the winter months and as a result hair can become dry, brittle and frizzy and skin tight and irritated. A humidifier will help to add extra moisture into the atmosphere and stopping the drying effect of the heating for skin and hair, we quite like this one here.
