At 7pm on the 24th October our stylist Bethan sat tentatively at her station on the other side of the chair, surrounded by family, friends and colleagues with her hair in fifteen tiny pony tails. As she cut the first one off herself the room exploded with cheers, one by one friends and family took it in turns to cut off a pony tail each, with Bethan then being the first to take the clippers to her newly cropped hair before Lauren, our deputy hair manager completed the shave. You could have heard a pin drop it was so quiet, everyone was in complete awe of such a brave act of kindness. You see Bethan decided to shave her hair off in aid on the mental health charity MIND, the Hull and East Yorkshire branch is entirely self-funded through charitable donations. The charity support people through every day living, provide 1-1 counselling, housing, group support, family support and many, many more aspects as explained to us by Katie, the MIND representative who joined us for the evening.
The reality is that 1 in 4 people in the UK suffer with mental health and in recent years the stigma attached to that is gradually being lifted. Bethan decided she wanted to do something to raise awareness of the charity and help to break the stigma, sharing that its ok to not be ok and most of all that there is no need to suffer in silence. She was fully aware that she could have done a sponsored walk or run, held bake sales or even had a sponsored silence, however she knew that to be able to make an impact it had to be something pretty big!
You can view the video of some of our favourite highlights from the evening here. The support received from our clients has been phenomenal and on behalf of Bethan we cannot thank you enough for your support and overwhelmingly generous donations. The salon shall be donating £1 from every cut and blow dry carried out throughout November and there is currently a raffle available for £1 a ticket in the salon with the chance to win a Skin Specific Elemis Facial and a blow dry, a hamper and many other goodies.
At the time of print the current total Bethan has raised stands at £1,526, the final total will be announced on December 1st. You can visit the just giving page to read Bethan's story or donate if you so wish.
